I have other modified cases from Hornady in other calibers and they are all made to exacting dimensions. If you are trying to work up a load in your rifle and you need to know how deep to seat the bullets, using one of these cases is a great way to determine how far out you can seat the bullet before it will engage the lands. This item works with the Hornady devise that screws into the back of the case so you can put a bullet into the case and push it into the chamber, then use the included plastic rod to push the bullet into the back of the barrel. When the bullet stops, you tighten the set screw and remove the whole thing from the rifle. The devise is made so that you can measure the overall length. That allows you to determine how to set your seating die to either set the bullets right at the beginning of the lands for the correct amount of jump before it reaches the lands.
