Great Trigger!

By Matt M. on Dec 28, 2023
I bought this trigger for a very specific application, and I have been pleasantly surprised by its quality and reliability. Normally, I shoot either Geissele Hi-Speed National Match triggers or Timney Calvin Elite triggers in my ARs. The BFS III is not far behind in terms of quality and feel, and in binary mode, is much better in terms of speed of follow up shots. I would estimate that I can send single, well aimed shots downrange 2-4 times faster with the BFS III in binary mode. If you want to send a lot of less well aimed shots downrange even faster, you can do that as well. Just know that the tremendous heat generated in the barrel from rapid firing a lot of rounds will quickly erode the accuracy of that barrel.
If you are familiar with installing AR triggers, the installation of the BFS III is quite simple. The instructions that are provided with the trigger are OK, but include small pictures that are not helpful. Also, the functions check section of the instructions is overly complicated, so I’ll simplify it for you: After performing the Safe, Fire, and Disconnector checks common to all AR triggers, place the safety selector in binary mode, charge the weapon, squeeze and hold the trigger (trigger should fire), recharge the weapon while still holding the trigger (you will feel a slight bump on your trigger finger when the bolt goes over the trigger – do not try to fight this bump by squeezing the trigger harder), release the trigger, and the trigger should fire. That’s it – simple – just apply common sense. It may take you a few times to get the feel of the binary mode function check.
I installed the BFS III in an Aero Precision M4E1 lower with a Panzer Arms ULT AR57 upper. The reason I chose the Franklin Armory trigger is that it will work with semi-auto bolt carriers. Binary triggers seem to be ideally suited for low recoil rounds such as the FN 5.7 x 28, 223 Remington, and 300 Blackout to maintain positive trigger control. I would not use one with my .458 SOCOM. The BFS III comes with two hammer springs and two trigger springs. I installed it how it came out of the package, with the lighter hammer spring and the heavier trigger spring. In this configuration, I measured the trigger pull at exactly 4 pounds. It also comes with two buffer springs, a medium and a heavy spring. I did not use either one because of the unique design of the AR57. Instead, I used a Sprinco reduced power (yellow) spring because I already knew that spring would work with the AR57 buffer and every type of ammunition available.
Shooting the BFS III is a lot of fun and surprisingly accurate. When you shoot it, you do have to concentrate on maintaining pressure on the trigger after the shot. Although it is advertised as a single stage trigger, it feels more like a two-stage trigger because of its unique design. When you release the trigger to fire the second shot, it is very smooth. Overall, this is an excellent trigger for AR-15s chambered for low recoil rounds.
