7.62x39mm .3115 255 gr Sub-X®

Sub-X® (Subsonic — eXpanding) bullets deliver big results without a big bang! Designed to provide deep penetration below the speed of sound, Sub-X® features a lead core. Long grooves in its gilding metal jacket combine with its flat profile and the patented Flex Tip® insert within the bullet’s hollowpoint cavity to help it expand reliably at low velocities. Cannelures provide positive case crimp, making Sub-X® ideal for semiautomatic weapons.

  • EXPANDS AT SUBSONIC VELOCITIES:  Patented Flex Tip® technology aids in expansion at velocities as low as 900 fps.
  • PROVEN PERFORMANCE:  Meets FBI protocol for terminal ballistic test requirements.
  • POSITIVE CASE CRIMP:  Lead core bullet with cannelured jacket provides positive case crimp for use in semiautomatics.
  • WIDE RANGE OF GUNS:  Designed to fit, feed and function in a variety of firearms, including gas system guns.

Not for Ruger American rifle

By Colin L. on Oct 27, 2025
I tested a box of Hornady subsonic with this bullet out of my Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39 (generation 2) over the weekend, and I can say while they didn't keyhole at 50 yards, they were absolutely yawing- negatively affecting accuracy. On a solid rest, the best group I saw was about 3". At 50 yards, that's pretty bad. These need a barrel with a twist rate of 1-8" for proper stabilization. They might be the bee's knees with a proper barrel, but out of the Ruger American Ranch, the best I can give is 3 stars.

This is the one

This is a great bullet for a variety of purposes.

Most guys are probably looking to hush up an AK or whatever. I am sure this pill will do the job. That’s not what I used it for though.

I recently acquired a Bramit Device for my original 1944 Tula PU sniper rifle. Nobody makes a subsonic 7.62X54R, so I developed a load myself that averages 1075 FPS using this bullet. It’s accurate, and good to 300 meters.

Please, Hornaday, never discontinue this bullet.

12/10.

7.62x39 Sub-X WORKS !

By Lawrence D. on Nov 21, 2023
Finally got these bullets for my loading experiment.
These definitely need 1/9.5" or faster twist. My Encore single shot barrel would not stabilize these.
My KAK 8" S/S AR pistol shoots them great at 1021fps average using Ramshot "Blackout" powder. Cycle, eject and lock the bolt back.
Will be trying them on deer this week. If these perform as good as the 190gr in a 300blk, I'll be very pleased!!
